Stadium: New urgency in efforts to upgrade Harry Gwala facility

2008-05-08 00:00

Urgent efforts are being made to get the upgrade of Harry Gwala stadium back on track for the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. This was after the project fell apart under the uMgungundlovu District Municipality.

However, after their past experience, Msunduzi councillors are wary and want to ensure that they are included as equal partners in the project. As a start they want an urgent joint Exco meeting with the district.

The new district mayor, Yusuf Bhamjee, and Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo met yesterday morning to kickstart the progress and the first priority was a request to Msunduzi for money to demolish the existing grandstand.

A new stand is to be built in its place according to Fifa standards, with proper changerooms, broadcasting facilities and entertainment areas.

A decision on whether the money will be made available will be taken after the joint meeting.

Exco members want questions answered such as why Msunduzi is expected to make this contribution when the province gave the district R50 million for the project. Why could the money for the demolition not come from this amount and why was the money given to the district and not to Msunduzi?

Most outspoken on the issue were ANC councillors Themba Zungu and Pops Chetty, prompting the IFP’s Dolo Zondi to ask Zungu whether the meeting should be adjourned so that the ANC can hold a caucus and "go sort out all these issues with your province."
