Stage is set for Eston

A REVAMPED course and a superb weather forecast will see a massive field at the Illovo Eston MTB Challenge on Sunday.

Over 2 500 entries had been received at the close of the online entry process. Hundreds more are expected to enter on the day, particularly in the 10 km STIHL Kids Ride and 18 km Tala/aQuellé family ride events.

At the front of the field, in the 60 km Eston Marathon, the men’s race appears to be a five-horse race with defending champ Rourke Croeser and team-mate Travis Walker squaring off against Brendon Davids, Andrew Hill and Max Knox.

Despite consecutive Eston victories a possibility, Croeser insists Sunday’s race is about ensuring a victory for his team, regardless of which rider clinches the win.

An error in the dying stages of 2013’s clash cost Davids dearly and he is relishing the chance to right the wrongs this time around.

Stuart Marais, Tyron Bird, David Low and Tyronne White may not be likely podium challengers but there is plenty of experience amongst this quartet. With junior Alan Hatherly in the mix, these riders may well make up the second half of the top ten.

The women’s sees Jeannie Dreyer starting as the clear-cut favourite.

Dreyer claimed a commanding victory in 2013 and despite turning her attention towards multisport since her remarkable eighth in the women’s race of the UCI MTB Marathon World Championships at Cascades recently, it will take plenty work from the women to prevent her second successive win.

Like the 60 km, the 40 km has enjoyed a route refresher and the new course is set to give participants a unique perspective of the region.

The popular 40 km race will see riders taken on a journey that includes an increase in single track while giving a novel experience of cycling behind a local waterfall.

The 18 km journey through the pristine Tala Game Reserve and the possibility of crossing paths with some of the local wildlife has scores of social riders eagerly awaiting their chance to take to the Eston trails this weekend.

Registration for the event takes place from 5.30 am to 9.30 am at Eston Club on race day.
