Stage is set for a run fest

THE Witness Maritzburg City Marathon takes place this weekend, with the marathon, half marathon, 10 km road race and the seven or 14 km trail runs all taking place today and tomorrow and set to accommodate around 5 000 runners.

The start of tomorrow’s marathon and half marathon take place in Bulwer Street outside Merchiston School at 5 am, with both races finishing at the Carbineers Drill Hall.

After a Naval salute gun gets proceedings underway, runners will move straight down Bulwer Street for a kilometre before turning left into Echo Road and wiggling through the islands into Masukwane (East) Street. Half-a-kilometre later they will turn left into Jabu Ndlovu (Loop) Street before their scenic tour of Pietermaritzburg that will move through Pelham, Scottsville, Epworth, Bisley and Hayfields. There will be refreshment stations every three kilometres, courtesy of the some 500 volunteers.

Registration will take place in the main hall at the Carbineers from 9 am to 5 pm today and from 4 am to 4.45 am tomorrow. Entrants for the 10 km can collect their race packs until 8.30 am tomorrow. It is recommended that you collect your race number, timing chip and T-shirt from registration today rather than tomorrow. Trail registration will only be from 6 am to 6.45 am this morning.

Preferred parking for runners is in Alexandra Park.

There will be a kid zone with professional care and secure supervision available from 7 am to 5 pm today and from 4 am to 12 pm tomorrow. The cost per child is R30.

To add value to the event, organisers have also been partnered by Bidvest and Pink Drive to stage a series of fun runs/walks for the whole family. All the distances are based on 42 and 21, starting with a one (2,1 km) or two (4,2 km) fun run at 2 pm followed by a 420 metres, 210 metres, 42 metres toddler trot and then a 21 metres nappy crawl. All the events are priced at R30 and entries can be purchased from 9 am onwards today, at the registration. Each finisher will receive a MaraFun hamper including Kara Nichha’s Vegetarian Fast Foods and Clover products, and 1 000 children will each receive a commemorative shirt.

All club captains are requested to make every effort to get their club tents erected today by 5 pm.

Caterers will be on hand at the Drill Hall throughout proceedings.

“Above all, we want the runners to enjoy their Witness Maritzburg City Marathon experience and the hospitality of our city,” commented race director John Hall.
