Standard Cricket Club enjoying the best of times

2013-02-21 00:00

IT has been the best of times for Standard Cricket Club’s first XI of late. The Wanderers Club-based side won the coveted KFC Natal Cup T20 final and augmented that outstanding success with an excellent three-wicket win over arch-rivals Varsity in the KZN Inland Premier 50 League.

The win was due in part to the batting prowess of SJ Erwee and the burgeoning bowling talents of Art Lindeque.

In the KFC Natal Cup T20 final, Standard scored 110/9. Underrated all-rounder Brent Kay top-scored with 24 in the face of the evergreen Ant Foster’s 2/24 in his allotted four overs, while Rob Hampson took 2/20 in his four-over stint.

In reply, “The Farmers”, as the Midlands team are known, managed to score 105/7 in their 20 overs to fall an excruciating five runs short of parity and a trademark Mathew Hulett six away from winning this classic encounter between two proud club teams.

Hulett ended on an unbeaten 46 as Midlands were left with the uncomfortable feeling of what might have been, but Standard can point with every right to the superb figures of Kay (2/19 in four overs) and the ever-improving Marcel Frenzel (2/10 in four overs) as the reason for their title success.
