Standard defeat Zingari to top league standings

2014-02-20 00:00

IT was business as usual for the undefeated Standard Cricket Club who maintained a 10-point lead at the top of the KZNICU Premier League standings when they beat Zingari over the weekend.

It seems as though little can be done to stop Standard who currently sit on 50 points with second-placed Varsity trying their best to close the gap with just three weekends of play remaining.

In a low-scoring game, a Brent Kay-inspired Standard managed to skittle Zingari out for just 101 in 30.5 overs.

Standard then made light work of the Zingari bowling attack, taking just 17 overs to reach the target of 102 with three wickets lost. Juan Pretorius made 32 not out as they won by seven wickets.

Varsity produced a clinical performance against Young Natalians to keep up with Standard, but with games running out, they’ll need a miracle to eclipse them.

Batting first, Varsity managed a good score of 221 from their 50 overs with Richard Hlela scoring 49 and Nathan Roberts making 46. Young Natalians’ Babarak Mubarak produced a good spell of overs, picking up five wickets for just 24 runs.

Varsity then swiftly removed their opponents for 135 runs in 27.3 overs with Ashley Sookalu ending up with impressive figures of 6-45. Varsity won the game by 86 runs.

Northern Combines walloped Masimbemunye by 162 runs as they chase second-placed Varsity with Standard out of reach at this late stage in the league.

Sheldon Mungaroo scored 65 and Shaun Fourie made 67 as Northern Combined put together a score of 243 in 45 overs. Masimbemunye’s Monde Ntshiza took 5-38.

Masimbemunye were unable to use the wicket as well as Northern Combined did and they were skittled out for 81. Mfundo Khumalo was Northern’s best bowler taking four wickets for 29, while Feraaz Khan finished with figures of 3-9.

Northerns won that game by 162 runs.

The KZNICU Schools Combined also made light work of Lancashire, beating them by 53 runs. KZNICU Schools made 203 from their 50 overs, and managed to bowl Lancashire all out for 150.
