Standard secure Premier 60 title

2009-03-23 00:00

ALTHOUGH not a ball was bowled in their scheduled match against Northern Districts in Newcastle on Sunday, Standard have won the KZN Inland Premier 60 club cricket title with one round still left in the competition.

As a result of poor communication between the clubs and the KZN Inland Cricket Union, Standard travelled all the way to Newcastle only to be told on arrival the game had been cancelled.

Defending Premier 60 champions Varsity failed to harvest enough points in their six-wicket win over Midlands at Eston to keep them within striking distance of the new top dogs in KZN Inland club cricket, whose match was officially called off due to rain.

Standard, having already retained their MCA Premier 50 title, are enjoying a magnificent season at all levels of the club and will be going all out for a history-making treble when they meet Varsity in the final of the KFC Inland 20/20 Series this weekend.

No results on the most recent 20/20 matches were made available to The Witness.

In other KZN Inland Premier 60 matches played on Sunday, Qasim Khurshid was the all-round kingpin for Young Natalians in a narrow seven-run win over Ladysmith’s K&L

Zingari cemented the fourth spot on the log with a 133-run victory over Lancashire, who are placed fifth.

At this stage, the top five Premier 60 batting averages go to Ross McMillan, Glen Addicott and Tafadzwa Chihota of Varsity, along with Zingari’s Tim Drummond and Ant Foster of Midlands.

The top five bowlers are Standard captain Kyle Nipper, Khurshid of Young Natalians, Morne van Vuuren (Standard), Ollie Humphries (Varsity) and Lyndon Brown (Zingari).

Premier 60: Midlands 245/9 in 60 overs (A Foster 86, B Smith 83, R McMillan 3-50, G Hampson 3-54) Varsity 249/4 in 47.3 overs (G Addicott 114, T Chihota 90). Varsity won by 6 wickets.

Zingari 246/8 in 52 overs (T Drummond 144*, L Brown 43, J Mbili 3-44) Lancashire 113 in 42.2 overs (G Basson 30, M Gerrard 5-39). Zingari won by 133 runs.

Young Natalians 112 in 40 overs (Q Khurshid 36) K&L 105 in 57.3 overs (Khurshid 5-21). Natalians won by 7 runs.
