Standard: taking it to the next level

2009-09-09 00:00

ARGUABLY the biggest challenge in their long history awaits Standard Cricket Club as they begin finalising preparations for the National Club Championships in a fortnight’s time.

The annual NCC brings the 12 champion provincial club teams from the 2008/09 season to Pretoria in order to determine the top club team in the country.

From September 22 to 26 the teams will play against each other in two sections with the winners meeting in the final on September 27.

Standard, the new KZN Inland Premier League champions after toppling regular winners Maritzburg Varsity from their pedestal, are drawn in Section A alongside KZN Coastals champs Berea Rovers, Police (Border), Pretoria High School Old Boys (Northerns), Burma Lads (Griquas) and Kempton Park (Eastern Gauteng).

Standard are the lone team from an Associate province of Cricket SA, the rest of the participants being from the better-financed affiliate provinces. At the end of last season the PMB side had to beat Pacaltsdorp United from associate cricket province South Western Districts in a play-off in George for their berth in Pretoria.

Section B consists of Free State University, Altuis United (WP), Stellenbosch University (Boland), Impala Plat (North West), Glenvista (Gauteng) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (EP).

Standard are playing several warm-up matches, including against Rovers at Wanderers on Sunday and next Friday versus Varsity/Inland Select XI.
