Standard win third title of season

2009-04-02 00:00

The Standard first team have won an unprecedented hat trick of club cricket titles this season, ending in Wednesday night’s six-wicket victory over Varsity in the KFC Inland 20/20 series final at the Maritzburg Oval.

It was a comprehensive victory, the keys being Standard’s excellent fielding and disciplined bowling.

Two or three pivotal moments made the difference: Clint Bowyer flashing in a superb return from the outfield to run out hard-hitting Varsity batsman Glen Addicott and Standard skipper Kyle Nipper bowling an on-song Ross McMillan (41 off 29 deliveries), this after Varsity started at more than 10 to the over.

The two lives that Standard top scorer Bowyer (41 not out off 39) enjoyed was also a factor, although his parternships with Andre van Vuuren (28 off 29) and Nipper (29 off 24) meant the province’s top cricketer, Morne van Vuuren, barely had to stretch his legs.

The man of the match was Nipper, who also took two wickets for 14 runs off his maximum four overs.

In the earlier sponsors’ challenge, Lancashire beat Varsity seconds by 86 runs, with Gareth Basson, Sheldon Stieger and Mbasa Gqadushe leading the way.

Zingari withdrew from the match.

The KFC Inland Twenty20 Series was a great success and marketing manager Kelvin Abrahams of the sponsors promised an even better event next season.
