Star footballer’s baby dies

2010-04-30 00:00

FORMER Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela has lost his 10-month-old son to a short illness.

The Witness established through Mabizela’s agency, Prosport International, that the burial took place at midday yesterday.

Prosport International’s Xoli Nhleko, speaking from Gauteng, said, “Yes, I can confirm that Mbulelo lost his 10-month-old kid who had been fighting for his life for a while now. As an agency, we could not make it to the funeral, owing to unforeseen circumstances, but we did our part in the form of financial aid offered …”

The Mabizelas apparently did not want this incident to be publicly known; hence the quiet funeral.

Mabizela’s brother, Sibongiseni, confirmed the death.

Platinum Stars coach Steve Komphela expressed shock upon learning of the death of his defender’s son.

“… Is that so? Why didn’t this boy tell us? If this [death] is indeed true, then on behalf of Platinum Stars, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to his family. Any soul lost is a great loss. One hopes that this setback does not get into him much, because he’s improved tremendously on the pitch.”

Since falling out of favour with Bafana Bafana coaches due to disciplinary issues, Pietermaritzburg-born Mabizela has been working hard towards being recalled to the national team, putting on impressive displays for Platinum Stars week in and week out last season.

At the age of 20 he was the youngest player to captain the Bafana Bafana squad in 2000.
