THE state yesterday opposed bail being granted to Pietermaritzburg policeman Constable Siboniso Charles Mkhize (29), who is charged with murder arising from an incident where his girlfriend was shot dead at her home in Berg Street at the weekend. Mkhize has been charged with murder (alternatively culpable homicide) for shooting Lindsay Draai (24) on Friday night, as well as illegally discharging a firearm in a built-up area. Several of Mkhize’s police colleagues attended his first court appearance yesterday to offer him moral support. He was not asked to plead to any of the charges by state prosecutor Rene Padayachee and the case was postponed to January 20 pending further investigation. Padayachee told the court the state was opposed to Mkhize’s release on bail and said a formal bail hearing will be held. She did not elaborate on the reasons. The Witness reported yesterday that Draai’s sister, Michaela, who was present when the shooting happened, had said a shot went off when the policeman took out his firearm to compare it to the one that was being brandished by an actor in the TV soap opera Generations. She suggested the shooting occurred by mistake. Mkhize, who looked despondent, was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance.
