State opposes farmers’ bail

2012-09-06 00:00

THE two farmers from Piet Plessis near Vryburg accused of murdering a farm worker and severely assaulting another one will hear today whether they will be released on bail.

Mathys “Mamba” Cloete (69) and his son Danie (34), who stand accused of murder, attempted murder and crimen injuria, appeared before magistrate Christelle Matthews in the magistrate’s court in Vryburg yesterday.

Mathys received his nickname after surviving a mamba bite several years ago. The Cloetes are respected people in the area.

The farmers have been in custody since 3 pm on Monday, when they reported the death of an employee.

According to provincial spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane, the accused allegedly assaulted two farm workers severely and shocked them with motor car cables.

Advocate Kammie Strydom, for the defence, dismissed this as nonsense, saying the matter had been taken out of context, and expressed doubt about a solid reason for the arrests.

Public prosecutor Maria Nteo requested a seven-day postponement to enable the state to complete its investigation and argued that the accused would interfere in the case. She said the farm workers’ community was beside itslelf with rage and might take the law into their own hands.

Matthews will rule today whether the state’s application for a seven-day postponement will be granted. If not, the bail application will continue.

She also ordered that the accused must be given their prescribed medicine.
