Stats SA confirms surveyis legit

STATISTICS South Africa has reassured nervous citizens by confirming the legitimacy of a recent survey.

A worried Pietermaritzburg resident said he was approached by a team from Statistics SA at his home recently.

According to the resident, they were “travelling in a white Corolla with Gauteng plates — a typical rental-type car”.

“Residents were asked to complete a two-page form headed 2011 Publicity Research Questionnaire … the purpose explained as ‘to test the Methodologies used for Census’ …” he said.

He also said many people in the area refused to take part in the survey as a detailed survey of a similar nature had been conducted last year.

According to Statistics SA’s Helen North, the survey in question “seems to refer to our recent publicity research project”.

It was designed to inform the public of “Census 2011”, and especially the manner in which data will be collected for the census.

“A pilot for the census was run last year in Pietermaritzburg … For the publicity research survey a small sample was selected in the Pietermaritzburg region. Thirty areas were selected and 10 dwelling units within these areas were then selected to participate.”

North said there are ways to identify legitimate surveys and researchers. “All our field staff are provided with ID cards and are required to wear these at all times.”

She added that concerned residents can “also contact our offices and give the field-worker’s details for us to validate that they are employed by us”.
