Stats SA: pencils should be used for census forms

2011-10-14 00:00

STATISTICS South Africa has reassured citizens about the use of pencils to complete census forms, saying this is to ensure they are filled in cleanly and can be easily scanned for data capture.

“Pencils are used to easily correct any mistakes made during interviews with respondents. Even if several mistakes are made they can be erased, whereas with pen the same effect is not possible,” said census spokesperson Trevor Oosterwyk.

He said people filling in their own forms may use black pens if they don’t have pencils.

He assured the public that the information provided during the census process is not changed, as an accurate reflection of the country’s population is needed.

“This is taken very seriously and individuals guilty of such an offence will be dealt with accordingly,” Oosterwyk warned.
