Stats sa: population passes 50 mln

2011-07-28 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s population has passed the 50 million mark, according to Stats SA’s latest mid-year population estimates, released yesterday.

The mid-year population estimates come as the statistical agency prepares to conduct a census 73 days from today.

The estimates, which cover all residents in the country, put the population at 50,59 million people.

When taking into account the South African birth rate, plus immigration, minus emigration and death rate, the population growth rate was 1,1%.

The mid-year population estimates are based on the 2001 census and use cohort component methodology to estimate.

Gauteng is the most populated province in the country, according to the latest figures, which show that 22,4% of residents live in Gauteng. KwaZulu-Natal is the second most populated province, while the Northern Cape is the least populated province.

The estimates show that 52% of the population are women.

Life expectancy at birth for 2011 is estimated at 54,9 years for males and 59,1 years for females.
