Staying focused did the trick

COMPETING against herself led to Priyanka Ramgoolam (17) from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High securing a place among the best matric achievers for 2013.

She ranks third nationally, a position shared with fellow KZN and Pietermaritzburg pupil Yusuf Mohamed.

To her surprise, Priyanka was yesterday named number one in the Umgungundlovu school district when Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni honoured the top 100 matriculants in KZN.

Priyanka said of her exam preparations: “I have put a lot of effort to ensure that I achieve good results and my hard work has paid off. It was not easy and I still have a long journey ahead of me.”

She said good time management became routine for her. While being part of the KZN schools’ debating team, Priyanka said her first love remained her studies. “I love debating and that kept me going, and I think that helped my achievements,” she said.

Achieving nine distinctions and being the only pupil from her school to be called to the national matric ceremony, would set an example for those coming after her, she said. “As women we need to work very hard to deal with stereotypes. I would like to see more girls putting their studies first and making their parents very proud.”

Priyanka has been accepted to study medicine at the University of Pretoria, a course she hopes would help her to take care of others. “All I want is to see people living a good life. I have to make my parents proud for the time they invested in my future. And I want to make my province proud too by coming back with a degree.”
