Stealthy: the taxes that are often forgotten

• 14% VAT on purchases: proposal to increase the VAT rate in order to fund the national health insurance system;

• Fuel levy: an increase in the fuel levy by 10 cents per litre on petrol and diesel from April;

• Road Accident Fund levy increased by 8 cents per litre;

• Ad valorem excise tax on cars that cost more than R900 000 will increase by from 20% to 25%;

• Carbon emissions tax, which increases new car prices by up to three percent;

• Sin taxes on alcohol and tobacco: 80 cents increase per pack of cigarettes; a can of beer will cost 6,4 cents more, a bottle of wine 13,5 cents more and a bottle of spirits R2,86 more;

• Electricity levy: increase in the levy applied to electricity generated from non-renewable and nuclear energy sources by 0.5c/kWh to 2.5c/kWh.

• Toll fees.
