Steep water and lights tariffs see B&B owners threatening closure

2011-10-05 00:00

BED-and-breakfast owners on the South Coast are keenly observing the hospitality sector in Pietermaritzburg, where B&B owners yesterday threatened to close their businesses following exorbitant rates increases levied on their water and electricity accounts by the Msunduzi Municipality.

One of several B&B operators, Guy Henderson, owner of Briar Ghyll Lodge in Athlone, who has been operating for 12 years, said his rates bill has gone from R10 000 a month to R17 500, “and that’s without the increase in water and electricity tariffs”.

“With my B&B already struggling from the recession these new tariffs are crippling and the final straw in trying to keep my establishment viable and afloat,” said Henderson.

He said he plans to de-register his business so it can be taxed as a residence.

Attempts to get comment from the Msunduzi Municipality were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
