Ster-kinekor’s sudden closure at Scottsville: what do the mall’s other business people and student cinema patrons think?

2009-11-05 00:00

WILL the sudden closure of the Ster-Kinekor cinemas at Scottsville Mall affect businesses there? And what do patrons think?

Peter Cochran, general manager of the Planet Play Bowling Centre, said the closure is definitely a good thing. “My bowling has gone to the roof because all the students, who used to go to the cinema for entertainment, are now coming to my place, so the closure has made me the happiest man on Earth.”

Spur owner Dirkie Weideman said having no notice of the closure hasn’t affected them. “I am not going to lose my customers, because the Liberty Midlands Mall is too far for them to go to.”

However, Khanyi Cingoshe, Scooters Pizza manager, said the closure will affect their business. “Our business has always been busy on Tuesdays and during weekends because that is the time when a lot of people go to the cinema, but on this Tuesday it has been really quiet. Our boss is considering moving from this place.”

Nomvuselelo Radebe, manager of Maxis Restaurant, said they have seen a difference in the three days since the closure. “People who used to go to the cinema, used to come to our restaurant [afterwards]. ”

DVD World assistant manager, Saniksha Roopnarain, said their sales have increased this week, but it is not because of the Ster Kinekor’s closure. “It is our November special that increased our sales. Lots of people who rent our DVDs told us that they … just like to rent DVDs and watch them at home with their families.”
