‘Sterling work by detective’

POLICE have charged convicted murderer Fezile Hlanganiso with the killing of a Southport man, Peter Smith (84).

Hlanganiso (24) was last week convicted of the murder of Louise Pitzer (71) of Umtentweni and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Smith was found hacked to death in his bathroom by a friend on May 7, while Pitzer’s murder occurred on May 29. Police found a bush knife covered in blood on the premises.

Hlanganiso has appeared in court in Port Shepstone on charges of murder and aggravated robbery. The case was adjourned to November 9 for further investigation.

In both cases the victims were alone and robbed of their valuables. Hlanganiso got away with Pitzer’s car. Smith’s car was taken half way out the garage. Police think the suspect may have been disturbed.

“It is sterling detective work by Detective Warrant Officer Du Plessis who linked him to this second murder case,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

According to the police docket, Hlangiso appeared in court for housebreaking about three years ago. The cases were withdrawn, however.
