Stern warning

2008-11-25 00:00

IN recent years there has been an epidemic of automatic teller machine (ATM) bombings with 1 000 country wide in 2007 to 2008, 160 of them in KwaZulu-Natal. ATMS are viewed by criminals as soft targets and bombing them an easy way to quick riches.

But such theft represents a heavy loss to the banks and a serious inconvenience to consumers.

How gratifying, then, that a judge in the Pietermaritzburg High Court has sentenced a convicted bomber to a total of no fewer than 63 years on various charges. Some, however, are to run concurrently, but Mzwakhe Gule will still have to spend 20 years in jail. It is a welcome and stern warning.
