Steve fined, keeps licence

JOHANNESBURG — Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr was fined R10 000 yesterday for speeding near Bronkhorst-spruit last year, but he did not lose his licence.

He was arrested on December 19 after he drove 169 km/h in an 80 km/h zone and charged with reckless or negligent driving and exceeding the general speed limit. He was released on bail of R500 and told the media he was guilty of speeding and had no excuses.

Under yesterday’s plea-bargain, the court ruled Hofmeyr’s driver’s licence would not be suspended because he drove about 12 000 km a month to earn his living as an entertainer. He supported six people financially.

Magistrate Elsie Schnetler reportedly told the court she could see Hofmeyr had shown remorse for what he did. She said she had high appreciation for the way in which the accused had co-operated with the court.

Hofmeyr said in a statement it was not his intention to speed, it was just that the car was relatively new and he did not know the speed. “I am not a devil for speed, I don’t get an adrenaline rush from speeding.

“We are happy with the fine, what the law says we are going with. It’s a R10 000 fine that’s basically my honeymoon budget,” he said.

“My job here is not to break the law. I march against that most of the time. I don’t want to be part of that problem, I want to be part of the solution,” he said.
