Steyn set to undergo minor leg surgery

2013-10-30 00:00

SPRINGBOK centre Francois Steyn, who defied his critics in producing a powerful midfield display in the Currie Cup final, is back in hospital for minor surgery.

Steyn limped from the field late in the final at Newlands and commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli confirmed yesterday that the burly centre was undergoing minor leg surgery.

Steyn first underwent emergency surgery after a Super Rugby match in New Zealand early in May and spent five months fighting his way back to full fitness ahead of the Currie Cup play-offs.

He was a surprise omission from the Springbok tour squad and will now be out of action for three weeks, ruling him out as a possible injury replacement for the three Tests.

Straeuli confirmed that all the Sharks triumphant Currie Cup squad members, apart from outside centre Louis Ludik, had been contracted for the 2014 season. Ludik has taken up a contract with French club Agen.

The Sharks have also signed the 115 kg Griquas tighthead prop Lourens Adriaanse, who has been a member of the Springbok squad this year, but has now been dropped for the tour without ever playing.

Springbok wing JP Pietersen and Ryan Kankowski will return from their Japanese clubs in February to rejoin the Sharks squad.

• The disciplinary hearing for Western Province forward Michael Rhodes, scheduled to take place yesterday, has been postponed until tomorrow. Rhodes was cited for a dangerous tackle on Bismarck du Plessis in Saturday’s final.
