Still no register of interests for MPLs in KZN

2014-09-03 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal legislature has yet to come up with a register of interests for its 80 Members of the Provincial Legislature, almost three months after being sworn in.

And this time round, political parties seem to agree that the absence of said register should be addressed.

The Witness yesterday established the institution was still distributing forms to the MPLs in August asking them to declare their properties, gifts and business interests, two months after the deadline.

The forms were apparently dished out for the second time when the the department budgets were tabled by Premier Senzo Mchunu and MECs.

The legislature’s rules book stipulates that MPLs must disclose their interests within 30 days of the opening of the legislature after elections, and thereafter make annual disclosures in April.

It is supposed to contain property ownership, business interests, sources of income, gifts received and sponsorships, among others.
