Still no sign of missing Midmar swimmer’s body

2014-02-13 00:00

THE search for missing aQuelle Midmar Mile swimmer Thabo van Straten continued until late yesterday to no avail.

Search leader Lieutenant Jack Haskins, who has been trawling the water with his rescue dog Udain, said they searched until last light yesterday evening and were due to start the search again early this morning.

“We were expecting the body to surface today because of the heat but unfortunately Mother Nature is in control here and there is nothing much we can do besides continue looking,” said Haskins.

He said divers had been out for most of the day but the search was called off last night because of poor light. Haskins said he had to get help from members of the Port Shepstone search and rescue team as many of the Pietermaritzburg members had to report for duty at the start of the Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Van Straten’s fiancée Shene Jones and his family members continued to keep vigil at the dam in the hope he would be found.

The 42-year-old Gauteng medical company employee was reported missing after failing to reach the finish line on Saturday.
