'Still together, still lost'

2008-12-05 00:00

OPENING locally this week are Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

at all three movie complexes; The Women at CineCentre and Quarantine and Yuvvraaj at Nu Metro.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath and is the sequel to the 2005 animation Madagascar. This time, the New York zoo animals have had enough of Madagascar and want to get back to Manhattan. They find a crashed World War 2 plane, and make it fly again. Voices include Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Subhash Ghai directs Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan in Yuvvraaj. A young man quarrels with his father and sets off to Prague where he makes his living singing in a chorus with the orchestra. He falls in love, but her father is not impressed. And so he has to try to secure his inheritance. Filmed on location in Europe.

The Women is directed by Diane English (remember Murphy Brown? She was involved in that) and is based, if tenuously, on Clare Boothe Luce’s play and George Cukor’s 1939 film of the same name. The main characters are four women friends — men don’t have roles here, except as passers-by. Starring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bette Midler, Candice Bergen and others. Quite some cast, but reviews have been lukewarm.

Quarantine is a horror film, directed by John Erick Dowdle and starring Jennifer Carpenter, Steve Hernandez and Steve Harris. A reporter sets out to shadow members of the fire brigade. But they get sealed into a building where a mysterious virus is raging.
