Stock theft: six in court for assault

SIX men appeared in court in Paulpietersburg in connection with allegations of attempted murder, assault and kidnapping of a suspected stock thief.

Director Phindile Radebe said members of the Newcastle task team arrested the suspects on Saturday following an incident where a man was allegedly handcuffed and assaulted with electric cables, on a farm in the area. The victim was suspected stealing cattle.

Five accused, Friedhelm Klingenberg (47), Jacobus Witmann (34), Sipho Nhlabathi (33), Zakhele Lukhele (31) and Amos Mthabela (44), appeared in the Paulpietersburg Magistrate’s Court charged with attempted murder and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and were released on R500 bail each. Lucky Shabangu (29), appeared before the Utrecht Magistrate’s Court on a charge of kidnapping and was released on R500 bail.

The cases were adjourned to October 21.
