Stolen baby reunited with mom

2008-03-11 00:00

A two-month-old baby was reunited with her mother yesterday, more than 24 hours after she was abducted.

Khanyisile Ngubane (18) returned to her home in Elandskop after school on Monday afternoon to discover that an unknown woman had taken her child.

The baby had been left in the care of her grandmother, Khanyisile’s mother. A woman had arrived at their home and said she had been sent to fetch the child and take it to the clinic for immunisation.

When Khanyisile arrived home, she was shocked to receive the news. Her sister, Sibongile Ngubane, told The Witness that the police would not help on Monday.

Yesterday the baby was traced to a woman who lived across the river from their home.

"Khanyisile saw a suspicious woman carrying a baby yesterday morning, but she was not sure what to do," Sibongile said.

Police followed leads and the baby was found at a nearby house yesterday afternoon. It is alleged that the woman who stole the baby told her mother that she had given birth.

Police said the 23-year-old woman has been arrested.
