A PIETERMARITZBURG businessperson who was faced by a man brandishing a firearm at him on Sunday, punched the robber in the face and chased him and his accomplices off with a stick.

The plucky Akhadar Khalid told The Witness he was not going to let the robbers get the better of him.

“I won’t just surrender to robbers without fighting back,” he said.

The robbers, initially posing as shoppers, attempted to rob Save-O-Matic store in Old Greytown Road on Sunday afternoon.

At about 7.30 pm, two men entered the shop as it was about to close.

Khalid was walking to the door when one of the robbers allegedly whipped out a gun and tried to rob him.

Khalid bravely punched the gunman in his face and a struggle took place until the robber managed to flee. The owner then ran to the shop’s counter and took out a stick that he used to chase them out his shop.

“I wanted my bush knife but I could not find it and the only thing there was the stick. They wanted the money. They shouted at my wife to open the till but because she was panicking, she couldn’t.”

Khalid told The Witness that he was not going to stand back and allow the men to rob his business. “They must know that we won’t just allow them to do as they please. I had to protect my business. If we let them do as they please, they will come back the following day and rob again,” he said.

The CCTV footage shows the two robbers who pretended to be shoppers before pointing firearms at Khalid’s wife who panicked and tried to open the till.

Mohamed Younis, who also works at Save-O-Matic, said he had just left the shop to go to another shop to fetch bread when the robbery unfolded.

“I left Khalid with his wife and daughter at the shop and I think he wanted to protect them and the business. The robbers fled without taking the money they wanted from the shop,” said Younis.

He added that the robbers fired off four shots as they fled in a white bakkie.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of attempted armed robbery had been opened, but declined to give further details.
