Storm: at least 950 need shelter

2009-12-11 00:00

WEDNESDAY night’s storm left more than 950 people struggling to get their lives together.

UuMsunduzi disaster management spokesman John Gutridge yesterday said 175 houses in the Edendale area were affected by the storm.

“We are still doing the rounds and the numbers will increase … The Edendale area was badly hit but no injuries were reported,” Gutridge said.

Ward 20 councillor Bonginkosi Mazibuko said the roofs of 24 houses in his area were blown away. He said they were still moving around trying to assist people to arrange sleeping places.

In the Willowfountain area, 10 mud houses were partly damaged.

Yesterday afternoon, the disaster management team was in the area to get the exact number of damaged homes and of residents who will need priority assistance.
