Storm floods home in Copesville, causes blackout in Hilton

2011-11-28 00:00

A SEVERE thunderstorm yesterday afternoon flooded a Copesville home and left Hilton without electricity for several hours, while some roads were difficult to navigate.

Lee-Ann Polugadu said her mother’s house in Satinspar Drive was flooded.

Polugadu said they were having supper when the storm broke out and in no time they were knee-deep in water.

“My mother rushed to clear the drain in the back yard, which is always problematic during heavy rains as it cannot handle the load of water gushing in.

“When she came back into the house it was worse as every room was already flooded.

“Some time in the 1990s we had a similar problem and it is made worse by our stormwater drains, which become useless in heavy rains. We have four in our area, but there are people who dump their dirt into them,” she said.

Ward 29 councillor Thandi Ndlovu said she was not aware of the incident but would assess the extent of the damage before reporting to relevant authorities who will decide what should be done.

Power was restored to Hilton residents just before 7 pm.

The South African Weather Service has warned of more heavy rains to come.

Spokesperson Nduduzi Mthembu said there is a 60% chance of heavy rains today, which may result in flooding and bad driving conditions across parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

The weather is expected to clear during the week.
