Storms wreak havoc in northern KwaZulu-Natal

MORE than 100 houses were severely damaged by storms propelled by gusty winds in the Amajuba District last Thursday.

Over the weekend, KwaZulu-Natal disaster management authorities were assessing the full extent of damage.

Spokesman for the provincial local government department, Lennox Mabaso, told SABC news that they have dispatched emergency assistance in the form of blankets, food and tents to the area.

Mabaso said the heavy rains wrought havoc at about 150 homesteads in the areas of Amajuba district, comprising Ngogo, Newcastle and Dannhauser.

He said that currently the disaster management centre of the province is co-ordinating with a district disaster management centre.

District mayor Mkhulu Mlangeni told The Witness yesterday that relief was coming in a satisfactory manner. He said they have already supplied tents and blankets in areas like Ngogo and Amathukusa near Madadeni.

"We’ve just had a meeting with the MEC of Social Welfare, Meshack Radebe, and have resolved that we need to get full report from areas like Dannhauser, but today we’ll be delivering food parcels to those families affected by the storm," he said, adding that there were no deaths reported, but that there have been a few injuries.

In late November last year, a violent thunderstorm claimed one life, destroyed 70 homes and left hundreds homeless in the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
