Stott wins exciting Muden race

2008-02-12 00:00

Ant Stott narrowly defeated Jason Graham in the final sprint for top honours in the Matalec Golden Valley race on Sunday.

After a race-long tussle that included the leading K2 of Deon Bruss and Hillary Pitchford, Stott finally managed to keep his nose ahead by less than a second at the finish on Mount St Bernard farm in Muden.

At the halfway point in the 25 km A Class race, Bruss and Pitchford took the hot-spot prize in the sprint for the Muden road-bridge, with Stott taking the last rapid a little wide and unable to pull back in time. However, in the second half of the race, the previous day’s Stihl Dusi Non-Stop began to take it’s toll and Bruss and Pitchford were just under a minute off the pace at the finish.

Lance Kime was the first junior home in fourth place overall and Angelique Mulder won the women’s race in an excellent seventh overall.

The Mooi river was flowing at a medium/low 9 cumecs, but despite this offered plenty of fun and challenge. Visiting Gauteng paddler Keith Flemmer was doing his first Golden Valley and remarked:

“Awesome river! This is my first but definitely not my last, I’ll be back next year with twenty of my mates.” Great news for organiser Helmut Bruss of Umvoti Canoe Club and sponsor Jan Leclesio of Matalec who, as usual, put on a very well organised event.
