Straight to gold for Vories U16

THE Voortrekker first and U16 teams have participated in the Durban Action Netball League held at the Pinetown Action Sports Arena each Friday afternoon and evening during the third term.

“Action netball is played on the same field as that which is used for action cricket, with the ball always staying in play, and last Friday saw the play-off matches being played, with both Voortrekker teams reaching the finals,” Voortrekker director of sport Charmaine Koekemoer told The Witness.

With Voortrekker’s Sulize O’Moore named Player of the Match, the Vories first team beat St Mary’s of Kloof 23-20 in the play-offs to earn a berth in the final against Kingsway.

Kingsway had been superior in the league, beating all the teams with ease, to go straight to the final. Once again, Kingsway showed why they were log leaders throughout the season, as they beat a gutsy Voortrekker 44-11, exhibiting some fantastic netball.

The Vories U16 team ended top of their log and went straight to the gold medal match. In a closely contested encounter, it was Kingsway who beat St Mary’s for a place in the final against Voortrekker.

However, the Voortrekker U16 team were clinical in the final, beating St Mary’s 27-9 to win gold, with Voortrekker’s Jade Kriel being awarded the Player of the Match accolade.

Koekemoer said that Voortrekker have dominated the netball scene for many years, having represented KwaZulu-Natal at the National Schools Tournament a number of times.

“However, the Vories first team have been struggling in recent years against some of the top KZN schools such as Kuswag, Port Natal and Kingsway. This year was different,” said Koekemoer.

“Apart from the successes of the Voortrekker first team and U16 team, our U15 team were joint top of the log in the Umgungundlovu League, and our netball coach, Janette van der Spuy, decided to enter two of our teams into the Action Netball League to gain much-needed experience,” said Koekemoer.

“Two Vories players represented KZN at the Action Netball National Tournament this year, Alicia Syffert captaining the KZN U18 B team, while Sulize O’Moore played in the KZN U15 team.”
