Stranded Pietermaritzburg sisters stand by to fly out

THE South African government said a plane was to leave late yesterday evening for the Libyan capital Tripoli to evacuate SA citizens.

A spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Co-operation, Clayson Monyela, told Weekend Witness the decision for the full-scale evacuation was taken on Thursday after the situation in that country worsened and “it became apparent that there was no solution in sight”.

The wife of Siyabonga Kheswa, the Director of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business, Busisiwe, and her sister Hlengiwe Skhosana are among the South Africans to be brought back home after being stranded in Tripoli for more than a week.

“I phoned the hotel and was told that my wife and her sister were not there. I’ve also communicated with the department and they informed me about the arrangement so I’m looking forward to be reunited with her. It’s been a long and tiring period,” said Kheswa
