Strange and Hairies at Maritzburg Music Club

2009-06-05 00:00

THE next Maritzburg Music Club (MMC) evening at the Red Door features the legendary and tireless Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters. Well known to Pietermaritzburg audiences and veterans of the KwaZulu-Natal music scene, the Hairies can be relied upon to lighten your spirits and bring a tap to your toe.

The MMC will also be hosting Anna Strange, a folk singer from the United States. Strange, who is visiting KZN, lives in the midwest, near Chicago. “I started playing guitar after my trumpet was stolen around 1985 or so,” she says. “I make my living as a folk singer in the U.S. and have played all over, from Key West, Florida to Seldovia, Alaska, and from California to Maine. I’ve also played in Russia, Belgium, Germany, and Venezuela, although I usually stick close to the midwest.”

She performs mostly for schools, families and children, “but I have a good career as a peace and justice singer. It’s a good thing that the children’s shows pay the bills.”

Strange will be returning to the U.S. to embark on a six-week backpacking trip on the Appalachian Trail to raise money for The Children’s Music Network, and she welcomes sponsorship from “anyone, anywhere”.

“I’ve brought along a selection of American folk instruments, including the mountain dulcimer, gandy dancer and Native American flute.”

Strange will have CDs for sale for R100 each. For more details visit

The evening begins at 8 pm with an open mic stage. The MMC encourages newcomers to come and showcase their talent.

The evening promises to be a good one on Tuesday. Entrance is R20.
