Strauss cousins to go head to head in Boks clash with Ireland tomorrow

2012-11-09 00:00

RICHARDT Strauss, the former Free State hooker, will win his first cap for Ireland against the Springboks in Dublin tomorrow and will pack down against his cousin, Adriaan.

Strauss, the brother of the ex-Sharks centre Andries, spent four years with the Free State Cheetahs (2006-2009) before joining Leinster and he has now qualified to play for Ireland.

“I made my commitment three years ago and I’m just very happy to run out for Ireland,” said Strauss.

“I would have taken it if it was against an U13 B team, so the opposition doesn’t really matter.”

Coach Declan Kidney praised the South African’s commitment to the Irish cause.

“Richardt has done well after picking up his things to come over here.

“It wouldn’t have been easy, but he fought his way to where he is now,” Kidney said.

Jamies Heaslip will lead an injury-hit Ireland for the first time tomorrow, taking over the captaincy in the absence of Paul O’Connell and Brian O’Driscoll.

Keith Earls takes over from the world-class O’Driscoll at outside centre, while Irish regulars Rory Best, Stephen Ferris, Sean O’Brien and Rob Kearney are also missing because of injury.

Kidney said they were expecting a typical physical challenge from the Boks.

“We’ll do what we’ve always done,” he said.

“We won’t make any promises, but we will give it our best shot.”
