Strictly ‘no drugs’ at beach party

2013-06-29 00:00

THIS weekend Durban’s central beachfront is expected to explode when up to 6 000 partygoers attend SA’s largest beach party.

Aquafest 2013, now in its third year, is a two-day dance party starting this afternoon with two dance floors and a host of South Africa’s top DJs, including 5FM’s Gareth Cliff, DJ Fresh, Mark Stent and Euphonik.

And like any big dance event, drug use is expected.

However, organiser Big Show Concerts assured Weekend Witness every effort will be taken to prevent illicit drugs entering the premises.

Safety officer Percy Govender said with 100 security personnel, a further 40 people conducting searches and the presence of both the SA Police and Durban Metro police, people smuggling in alcohol or drugs will be excluded from the venue and handed over to the relevant authorities.

“The beach party is not a free-for-all. We have double fencing surrounding the venue and strict access control as well as ‘black suit’ security personnel at various points. We will not tolerate patrons who are intoxicated. We have taken every precaution to make sure all patrons are safe,” said Govender.
