Strike leads to longer waits at garages

2013-09-10 00:00

THE petrol attendants’ strike affected motorists who were trying to buy fuel at some Pietermaritzburg garages yesterday.

Jonathan Naidoo from Hermens service station told The Witness that 26 of his staff had joined the strike.

“This is affecting the business and our customers. We are waiting on Numsa to tell them whether they can come back or if they are continuing with the strike. I am not sure what will happen,” Naidoo said.

Numsa has demanded, among other things, a R30 an hour across the board increase by 2016 on actual rates of pay for workers earning below R6 000 a month.

The Witness attempted to get comments from other service station managers, but most of them were busy helping out on their forecourts.

Some petrol attendants were seen picketing outside service stations in town while others were not in uniform, but working at some stations.

Members of the public who did not want to be named told The Witness that they waited longer than usual at a service station and were eventually helped by the manager.

National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) spokesperson Castro Ngobese said employers walked out on Friday’s negotiations.
