Strike: nurse stabbed in ward

2010-09-03 00:00

A NURSE was stabbed and sjambokked in a ward at Northdale hospital last night.

Staff at the hospital said the nurse was on duty in a male medical ward when four people wearing balaclavas entered the ward and attacked the woman with sjamboks and knives. She suffered a deep laceration in the upper arm and a less serious knife wound in the back.

A senior staff member said three nurses were on duty caring for 23 patients when the attack happened in front of patients.

The spokesperson, who declined to give her name for fear of intimidation, said the nurses were leaving their posts after the attack. Before the incident, all wards were staffed and functioning. The staffer said they would have to attempt to keep the hospital running with fewer staff last night.

Police were called and hunted the grounds for the attackers, she said.

An attempt to contact the hospital CEO was unsuccessful when the phone rang unanswered.
