Strike was tough, but she still achieved

2011-01-06 00:00

SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD Shamimah Asmal was shocked to find out that she was one of nine pupils at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School to obtain eight distinctions when this year’s matric results were released.

“I thought I would got four or five As, but certainly not eight,” said Shamimah.

She says the strikes of 2010 slowed down the whole learning process. She was so upset about the strikes that she wrote a letter to The Witness expressing her concern, which was published.

Shamimah is focusing more on the future than on the past, though. She will be studying Pharmacy [Biology was her favourite subject at school] at Rhodes University in Grahamstown this year and is very excited about where it will take her.

She attributes her academic success to her faith, family and her ability to stay calm.

“I have to say a big thank you to my parents too; they have always been there for me and have always supported me.”
