Strong cast in Think Theatre’s staging of ‘Othello’

2010-04-08 00:00

THINK Theatre’s staging of Shakespeare’s Othello is at the Playhouse Opera theatre from April 14 to May 7.

Geared mainly for secondary school pupils studying Shakespeare’s tragedy as a set work, the production is directed by the multi-award-winning Durban actress, Clare Mortimer, herself a writer and an experienced English teacher.

Schools performances are at 9 am and noon, Monday to Friday, with two public performances on April 15 and 30 at 7 pm. To book and for information about out-of-town performances phone the show’s producer, Margie Coppen, at 083 251 9412.

Othello features Farai Gwaze in the title role, playing opposite Karen Logan as Desdemona and Iain “Ewok” Robinson as Iago, with Libby Allen taking the role of his wife, Emilia.

Gwaze won the 2009 Durban Theatre Award for Best Newcomer for his role in Othello, and Robinson garnered a Best Supporting Actor award for his performance as Iago.

Also featured in the strong cast are Michael Gritten, Darren King, Marc Kay, Sean de Klerk, Loyiso MacDonald, Janna Ramos Violantes, Clinton Small, Bryan Hiles and Rowan Bartlett.

The production recently played to packed houses in Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg — and with its varied themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, this classic tragedy remains as relevant to present-day audiences as it ever was. — Arts Editor.
