Strong winds blow away emergency tents

RAIN and strong wind blew away the tents of Woodstock Road informal settlement in Mountain Rise yesterday, leaving some residents without a place to sleep.

The municipality had supplied the community with 69 tents after their shacks were destroyed by fire on September 21. A number of tents were blown away by the wind yesterday.

Mboniseni Shange told The Witness that life is hard in the tents.

“I don’t have an ID, and I can’t get my pension.

“The rain and wind are making life harder for us,” he said.

Resident Thulisile Ngcobo said some of the residents would only know when they returned from work that their tents were blown away.

Ward 35 councillor Thandi Matiwane said they have a plan to help the community. “We have a programme in the pipeline with some business people from the Mountain Rise area to help the community in that informal settlement,” she said.
