Strong winds close Van Reenen

2014-07-18 00:00

THE N3 was temporarily closed between Van Reenen’s pass and Tugela following strong winds gusting through the area yesterday.

N3 Toll Concession tweeted an alert for Van Reenen Pass that wind gusts of 141 km/h had been experienced there yesterday afternoon.

The pass was partially opened to light vehicles later in the afternoon with drivers being urged to drive carefully.

Zinhle Mngomezulu, Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson, said the road was closed at around 1 pm because of the strong winds, but as the winds subsided, it was partially re-opened to allow a three-hour traffic backlog to clear.

WeatherSA forecaster Edwin Thema said although the area had strong winds, they had began subsiding and they expected that by the evening, they would be moderate. He said yesterday afternoon the wind speed had already started to drop to 20-30 km per hour.

“With the winds this strong, obviously the area is not safe so the trucks on the road really must take care,” said Thema.
