LINAH Mabhida, a struggle heroine in her own right, and wife of deceased liberation fighter and ANC stalwart Moses Mabhida, died on Saturday.

Mrs Mabhida, who lived in Slangspruit near Imbali, died after a short illness at the age of 85.

ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala said the provincial executive committee received “with sadness” the news of Mrs Mabhida’s death and expressed its condolences to the family.

Zikalala said she was the pillar of her husband’s strength at the height of the liberation struggle.

“Following the passing of her husband [in 1986], comrade Linah Mabhida remained a huge source of inspiration within the movement always giving guidance and counsel,” said Zikalala.

He said the party will always admire her humility and her warm and loving spirit.

The ANC leadership visited the family yesterday, while Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize visited the family on Sunday to show support.

Thuthukile Mabhida, Mrs Mabhida’s granddaughter, said her grandmother was a loving, caring and sweet person who was always politically minded.

President Jacob Zuma visited the Mabhida family annually, bringing with him groceries for Mrs Mabhida.

The Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, which is to be used as one of the soccer venues in the 2010 Soccer World Cup, is named after her late husband.

Mrs Mabhida’s funeral will be held on Saturday at the Imbali stage one sports ground opposite the DUT Indumiso Campus. — WR.
