Student begs for film funds

2009-05-07 00:00

University of KwaZulu-Natal Film, Media and Corporate communications student Bruce Grobler has taken to the streets in a bid to raise funds for the shooting of his film for his honours degree.

The media student had to come up with a creative way to fund the making of his film project.

“We get cameras at a reasonable price at varsity because we are students, but I need about R3 000, which should cover all the expenses during the shoot.”

Yesterday morning, Grobler stood on the corner of Commercial and Victoria roads with a huge signboard which read “Please Help Me Fund My Film”.

“I was here from 7 am and I now have enough to cover meals during the shoot, but I have to leave soon because I have a lecture at 9 am,” he told The Witness early yesterday.

He said his film is a comedy that carries a strong message.

“It’s about what it means to be a man, not because you are physically big and strong, but to be a man at heart …

“You may be the smallest or poorest person, but you can stand up and do something that makes you a greater person.”

Grobler said his movie is also about bravery.

He said the smallest amount that was tossed into his begging can was a 10-cent coin and the largest amount was R80.

“During the time I have been here begging, I discovered that people who don’t look (rich) gave me more cash compared to people driving big cars. I wish to thank every motorist who gave me support, from the one who gave me 10 cents to the one who gave me R80.”

Grobler would welcome help and can be contacted at 074 126 6104.
