A 21-YEAR-OLD University of KwaZulu-Natal student was allegedly robbed and stabbed to death yesterday.

He is believed to have been hitchhiking to Mondlo in Vryheid when he was approached by two unknown men who robbed him of his possessions including a cellphone before stabbing him twice in the upper body.

He was still breathing when paramedics reached him at the Church Street N3 on-ramp hitchhiking spot, but later died.

Police found cash in his pockets, a UKZN student card and his identity document.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of murder was opened. “The deceased had stab wounds on his chest and shoulder and it is alleged he was stabbed by two unknown males,” he said.

Zwane said the motive is unknown.

“The police conducted a search for two males from downtown and checked the Matsheni beer hall as well but had no success.”

Zwane said yesterday police were still trying to trace the man’s relatives and were unable to release his name.
