Students camp outside DUT

2011-01-21 00:00

STUDENTS seeking funding to study at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) camped overnight outside the university’s Durban premises, a repeat of a similar incident at the University of South Africa (Unisa) earlier in the week.

The Witness was informed about the long snaking queues at DUT yesterday, of students seeking financial aid.

The brief response The Witness received from the university after inquiring about the matter is that students were all demanding to be seen or assisted at the same time, which resulted in the long queues.

The university has informed the paper that the matter has since been resolved after students were given appointment dates on which to come and make their applications for financial assistance.

On Monday, Unisa experienced similar queues. University hopefuls reportedly slept on the pavements after a misinterpretation of an SMS sent by the university. This resulted in queue chaos outside Unisa’s Durban campus. The students had allegedly received information that they would be assisted with financial aid for their studies on a “first come, first serve basis”.

However, Unisa has since explained that this was wrongly interpreted. The SMS had been meant for the students who had applied beforehand, who would be helped first.
