Students, staff give life to France library project

THE France community low-cost housing area, on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg, will benefit from a new mini library.

That’s thanks to the Divine Life Society which donated towards the building of the library/reading room, as well as the Pietermaritzburg Varsity College (VC) student and staff body, who worked tirelessly to source sponsorship in order to bring this project to life.

VC, along with the SOS Outreach programme, officially opened the centre recently.

Sonya Nursoo, VC Pietermaritzburg’s student relations manager, said the core component of the college’s philosophy was to encourage students to engage in “good citizenship and positive community involvement”.

The library/reading room project worked as the experiential learning experience for their first year Public Relations diploma. According to Nursoo, the students worked to­ge­ther to create a space where children could relax in a safe reading environment.

“The opening of the mini library/reading room is the culmination of hard work and extensive networking with community organisations. The gratitude of the community and the long terms benefits of this venture makes all the efforts worthwhile …

“For students and Varsity College staff it was heart-warming to interac­t with the 20 ‘young guests’ from the local primary and high schools …”
