‘Stupid’ tweet sees anchor suspended

2012-11-09 00:00

SPORTS anchor Lance Witten has been suspended by eNews after a tasteless tweet about an incident at the Linkin Park concert at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday.

Yesterday, Witten was bombarded by abusive tweets for his comments on Twitter about the tragedy in which one woman died and 19 were injured when a scaffolding collapsed outside the venue.

After the incident, he tweeted off his personal account @LanceTheWitten: “Linkin Park is so badass, people are dying to see ‘em.”

After receiving abusive responses, he tweeted: “Actually, if you feel you need to unfollow me because I made a joke people would’ve made tomorrow, be my guest. What happened was awful.”

He followed up with: “A few months from now, Trevor Noah will use that tweet as a joke on stage,” and ended with: “I have to apologise for that tweet. It was insensitive, in bad taste, and downright stupid.”

Shortly after, eNCA issued a statement announcing Witten’s suspension, saying that his comments did not reflect the company’s views or values, and that an inquiry would be conducted into his comments.

eNCA then tweeted: “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life, and all those injured in the LinkinPark incident.”

Witten’s suspension followed that of Hawks spokesperson MacIntosh Polela earlier this week for joking on Twitter about jail rape after kwaito singer ‘Jub Jub’ Maarohanye was found guilty of several charges, including four of murder, last month.

Officers said Polela had been suspended in terms of the police service’s communications regulations.
