Stylish period movie lacks substance

2010-02-15 00:00

I ACTUALLY waited for this film with bated breath, and to have to describe Veer as brain-dead is disappointing given that Director Anil Sharma is still basking in the afterglow of his superhit, Gadar.

Veer is long on style but short on substance.

The script, written by Salman Khan, is set in the 19th century. Veer (Salman Khan) belongs to a barbaric tribe called the Pindari who have lost their land through a British conspiracy. The Pindaris want their land back. Besides being faced with challenges of a British conspiracy, Veer has to confront the king of Madhavgarh (Jackie Shroff), who is plotting with the imperialist British. At stake is Veer’s love interest, Yashodhara (Zarine Khan), daughter of his sworn enemy. He also thirsts to avenge his father’s dishonour.

Our patriotic warrior is torn between this duty and his heart as he takes the audience from London to the blood-soaked battlefields of India.

Salman Khan is disappointing with his long hair and feeble biceps, and could not help to save the movie.

Debutante ZarineKhan is very expressive, but she still has a lot to learn. Shroff and Mithun Chakraborty share some shining moments. Sohail Khan is wasted — he should stop acting.

Sharma’s direction is lacklustre. He has great stars and majestic sets, but he fails to deliver.

This film is a total disappointment.
